Hello! Since we have probably never met let me introduce myself. My name is Catherine. I have the privilege of living in what I believe to be the greatest country in the world: Canada. I work in the field of sustainability communication. This is my first blog ever and as the title, suggests, this blog is designed to inspire. It’s designed to inspire those who think that perhaps there is not enough good happening in the world when it comes to tackling our big global challenges. And yes, I mean the big ones, like poverty, hunger, inequality, climate change.
Well, I happen to believe that there are pockets of brilliance popping up all over the world. I read about these clever ideas in various on-line newsletters and on social media and periodically I slap my forehead and think: that’s so smart! I tell my husband, I tell my mom, I tell my kids because these ideas inspire me. So, now I’m going to tell you too; because after all, don’t we all need a weekly dose of inspiration? So, this blog will bring you one, maybe two of these bright ideas each week and then you too can be inspired by all the good that is going on in our world.
But! we’re not going to start there. There’s a backdrop to this and that backdrop takes us to that big amorphous, bureaucratic organization called the United Nations. I know, I know….. but stay with me, because the United Nations did something quite cool last September – they agreed to The Sustainable Development Goals: 17 goals that are designed to end poverty, protect the planet and ensure prosperity for all. That’s pretty ambitious right? The 17 goals are below and each one has specific targets to be achieved over the next 15 years.
So, the inspired ideas I’ll be bringing you each week will show us that while the goals of eradicating poverty and hunger, protecting the planet and uplifting our fellow human beings seems overwhelming, there are brilliant people with brilliant ideas all over the world chipping away at these seemingly insurmountable goals. So, I invite you to check in once in a while for a dose of inspiration! Thanks – and until then.
